Substrates for Pedestal Elevated Pavers

and Synthetic Turf on Rooftop Decks

Many landscaped rooftop decks and terraces entail large formal pavers or wood tiles elevated on pedestals over top the waterproof membrane. Pedestals enable the pavers to be leveled over the roof structure, which is sloped for water drainage. Below are landscape solutions for elevating small natural stone pavers, pebbles or synthetic turf, plus protecting against large format pavers getting cracked or resisting the uplift pressures caused by high winds?

Galvanized steel ‘EPC Paver Plates’ provide a protective layer under pavers elevated on pedestals. These Plates protect against fall through should a paver get cracked with a pedestrian standing on it, and paver uplift in high wind situations. To protect against wind uplift, screws and washers secure countersunk plate corners to pedestals, and approved adhesives lock pavers to trays creating a solid, monolithic deck surface. Pavers and trays are removable for future roof maintenance.

Fiberglass Reinforced Grating (FRP) in 4’x8’ sheets is an extremely durable, long lasting product ideal for providing support to synthetic turf, green roof trays, or pavers elevated on pedestals. Fasteners are available to secure grates to pedestals and joists.

FRP Flammability Information:

The entire FRP Grating industry goes by ASTM E-84 (25 or Less). A rating of 25 or less on the ASTM E84 (Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials) corresponds to Class "A" (or Class I) flame spread classification.

ASTM E84 Flame Spread Classes:

  • Class A (Class I): 0–25 (least flammable)

  • Class B (Class II): 26–75

  • Class C (Class III): 76–200

Since 25 or less falls within the Class A range, it means the material has excellent fire resistance with minimal flame spread.
